Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process occurring through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal require the NLS import receptor, a heterodimer of importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo, and importin beta mediates docking at the nuclear pore complex. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with the cargo, while importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and nucleoporins’ FG repeats are essential for transport through the pore complex. The encoded protein belongs to the importin beta family.
