Target Information
This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, which catalyzes ATP synthesis using a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthase consists of two complexes:
- F1 (soluble catalytic core)
- Fo (membrane-spanning proton channel)
The F1 portion includes five subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon) with a stoichiometry of 3 alpha, 3 beta, and one each of the others.
The Fo portion consists mainly of subunits a, b, and c.
This gene encodes the alpha subunit of the catalytic core.
Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms. Pseudogenes exist on chromosomes 9, 2, and 16.
