Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Its expression may be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential. CD44 is found in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels; peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Dysfunction is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may relate to tumor metastasis formation.
