Target Information
ERN1 (endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1) is a serine/threonine kinase and endoribonuclease that functions as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It transmits stress signals from the ER to the nucleus by splicing XBP1 mRNA, which activates the unfolded protein response.
ERN1 is essential for extraembryonic cell function and fetal viability. Null mutants are viable but sensitive to ER stress conditions.
Depletion or inhibition of IRE1p leads to apoptosis under conditions that cause unfolded protein accumulation in the ER.
