Target Information
NGAL (Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, also known as lipocalin 2, siderocalin, or neutrophil lipocalin) is a 25 kDa glycosylated single-chain monomer and a member of the lipocalin protein family that binds and transports small lipophilic molecules.
It is released by activated neutrophils and can form dimers or higher oligomers, as well as complexes with matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9, gelatinase B).
Low-level expression occurs in various epithelial tissues and increases during inflammation or cancer. In the kidney, NGAL expression is dramatically elevated following ischemic or nephrotoxic injury.
