Target Information

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by eight conserved cysteine residues and common VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. There are two alternatively spliced isoforms: VEGFB167 and VEGFB186.

• VEGFB167: Highly basic heparin-binding protein, remains associated with cells or extracellular matrix.
• VEGFB186: Readily secreted form.

VEGFB stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and binds specifically to VEGFR1 (flt1), not VEGFR2. It is widely expressed, particularly in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human primary breast cancers has been linked to lymph node metastasis.
The VEGFB gene is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
