Target Information

The CDKN2A gene produces multiple transcript variants with distinct first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode different proteins, two of which act as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase.
Another variant encodes an ARF protein that stabilizes the tumor suppressor p53 by binding and sequestering MDM2, preventing p53 degradation.
Despite structural differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF share a role in G1 cell cycle regulation.
Mutations or deletions in this gene are common in various tumors, emphasizing its importance as a tumor suppressor.
