Target Information
The inhibin alpha subunit joins either the beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect granulosa-cell tumor size and can serve as a marker for primary or recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, expression of the inhibin alpha-subunit gene is suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Expression varies by tissue type, indicating that inhibin may act as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
