Target Information
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a member of the herpes virus family (Herpesviridae).
HSV types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), also known as Human herpes virus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and -2), are widely contagious among humans.
- HSV-1 strains typically cause cold sores.
- HSV-2 strains are responsible for most genital herpes cases.
Transmission occurs when an infected individual is shedding the virus.
The virion form of herpes viruses contains a large double-stranded, linear DNA genome encased within a capsid and surrounded by a viral envelope.
Different HSV strains carry over 70 open reading frames (ORFs).
HSV infection has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
