Background
Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. RL13A encodes a member of the L13P family, part of the 60S subunit, and is involved in repressing inflammatory genes through the IFN-gamma-activated inhibitor of translation (GAIT) complex. The gene is co-transcribed with small nucleolar RNA genes U32, U33, U34, and U35 located in introns 2, 4, 5, and 6. Multiple pseudogenes and alternatively spliced variants exist across the genome.
