Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75:25—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence-based recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, originally identified by its ability to recognize tyrosinase in an HLA-A24-restricted manner (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
