Background
This gene encodes the protein elongin B, a subunit of the transcription factor B (SIII) complex composed of elongins A/A2, B, and C. The complex activates RNA polymerase II elongation by suppressing transient pausing within transcription units. Elongin A acts as the active component, while elongins B and C serve as regulatory subunits. Elongin A2 is testis-specific and forms a stable complex with elongins B and C. The von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein interacts with elongins B and C to inhibit transcription elongation. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants and pseudogenes on chromosomes 11 and 13 have been identified (RefSeq, Aug 2008).
