Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP) that contains three additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins—Golli-MBP hybrid proteins and classic myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure suggests that MBP transcription is an integral part of Golli transcription, important for gene function and regulation.
