Target Information
COL17A1 encodes the alpha chain of type XVII collagen, a transmembrane protein and structural component of hemidesmosomes, which mediate adhesion of keratinocytes to the basement membrane. It belongs to the FACIT collagen family (fibril-associated collagens with interrupted helices) and is localized to tissues containing type I collagen, contributing to extracellular matrix integrity.
Dysfunction of COL17A1 is associated with epithelial recurrent erosion dystrophy and epidermolysis bullosa.
