CD9 antigen is a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of developing B lymphocytes, platelets, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, stimulated T lymphocytes, neurons, and glial cells in the peripheral nervous system.
It belongs to the tetraspanin family, which traverses the membrane four times.
Functions and Roles:
- Regulates cell activation and aggregation (via integrin CD41/CD61)
- Involved in cell motility, osteoclastogenesis, neurite outgrowth, myotube formation, and sperm-egg fusion
- Plays roles in cell attachment, proliferation, and immune stimulation
- Acts as a metastasis suppressor in solid tumors
