Target Information
Integrins are heterodimers composed of alpha and beta subunits that form noncovalently associated transmembrane glycoprotein receptors. Different combinations of alpha and beta polypeptides form complexes with varying ligand-binding specificities.
Integrins mediate cell-matrix or cell-cell adhesion and transduce signals that regulate gene expression and cell growth.
The integrin beta 4 subunit encoded by this gene acts as a receptor for laminins and typically associates with the alpha 6 subunit. It plays a pivotal role in invasive carcinoma biology.
Mutations in this gene are associated with epidermolysis bullosa with pyloric atresia, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
