Target Information
The protein encoded by the SERPINC1 gene is a plasma protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. It inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, regulating blood coagulation.
This protein contains two functional domains:
- Heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus
- Reactive site domain at the C-terminus
Its inhibitory activity is enhanced by heparin. Over 120 mutations have been identified for this gene, many associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
