Target Information

Plasminogen is a plasma protein synthesized mostly in the liver. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of approximately 88.5 kDa. The plasma concentration typically ranges from 70 to 200 mg/L.
Activation of plasminogen by tissue-plasminogen activator, urokinase, or streptokinase produces plasmin through cleavage and release of the preactivation peptide.
Plasmin consists of a heavy (A-) chain containing five kringles and a light (B-) chain harboring the active site. It is a trypsin-like protease that acts on fibrin, with kringle domains mediating fibrin binding.
Plasmin plays a crucial role in fibrinolysis, and congenital defects in plasmin can lead to recurrent thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism.
