Target Information
This gene encodes an aspartic proteinase belonging to the peptidase family A1. The encoded protein is a digestive enzyme produced in the stomach and is a major component of the gastric mucosa. It is also secreted into the serum and synthesized as an inactive zymogen with a basic prosegment. The enzyme becomes active at low pH through self-cleavage. Polymorphisms in this gene are associated with gastric cancer susceptibility, and serum levels serve as biomarkers for gastric diseases, including Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis. Multiple transcript variants and a pseudogene on chromosome 1 have been identified.
