Target Information
NDUFS4 encodes an accessory subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), also known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. Complex I is the first multi-subunit enzyme complex of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a vital role in cellular ATP production. It transfers electrons from NADH to ubiquinone through protein-coupled redox centers, contributing to proton gradient formation and ATP synthesis. Complex I consists of at least 41 subunits, with 7 encoded by mitochondrial DNA and the remainder by nuclear genes.
