ABHD5 단백질은 알파/베타 하이드롤라아제 폴드(alpha/beta hydrolase fold)를 가진 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 에스터레이스/리파아제/티오에스터레이스 하위패밀리의 촉매 3중체(catalytic triad)와 유사한 세 가지 서열 모티프를 포함합니다. 본 단백질은 촉매 삼합체의 세린 잔기 대신 아스파라긴을 포함하는 점에서 다른 구성원들과 구별됩니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 장쇄 지방산 산화가 저해되는 중성지방 저장 질환인 Chanarin-Dorfman 증후군과 관련이 있습니다.
