Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, playing a key role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with TCR for MHC class I molecules. CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found as homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers Lck recruitment, leading to cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are vital for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, with differentiation enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
