This gene encodes a class III member of the beta tubulin protein family. Beta tubulins form microtubules through heterodimerization with alpha tubulins. TUBB3 is primarily expressed in neurons and is involved in neurogenesis, axon guidance, and maintenance. Mutations in this gene are associated with congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3. In adults, TUBB3 serves as a neuronal marker essential for neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation.
Target Information
The betaIII-tubulin isoform is predominantly expressed in neuronal cells and serves as an early marker of neuronal differentiation. It is a specific probe for neurons and neuron-derived tumors. Although most abundant in neuronal cells, betaIII-tubulin is also detected in Sertoli cells of the testis and transiently in non-neuronal embryonic tissues.
