Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation represents a major degradative pathway for catecholamine neurotransmitters.
COMT also plays a key role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used to treat hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
Two forms exist in tissues: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing in their N-termini. Multiple transcript variants arise from alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
