Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X (BCL2L1) gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular activities. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the mitochondrial channel (VDAC), which controls membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key processes in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- The longer isoform functions as an apoptotic inhibitor.
- The shorter isoform functions as an apoptotic activator.
