NDUFA12 유전자는 미토콘드리아 복합체 I의 구성 단백질을 암호화하며, 이는 산화적 인산화 시스템의 일부입니다. 복합체 I은 NADH로부터 유비퀴논으로 전자를 전달하여 ATP 생성에 필요한 양성자 구배를 형성합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 미토콘드리아 복합체 I 결핍으로 인한 Leigh 증후군과 관련이 있으며, 염색체 5와 13에 위유전자가 존재합니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이가 생성됩니다.
