Description: Activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM; CD166) is a 105 kD cell-surface adhesion molecule belonging to the Ig superfamily of receptors. ALCAM is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, possessing five extracellular Ig domains, a transmembrane domain, and a short cytoplasmic tail. ALCAM is involved in homotypic adhesion, as well as heterotypic adhesion with its natural ligand, CD6. A soluble isoform of ALCAM has been shown to inhibit homophilic adhesive interactions. ALCAM is expressed on a variety of cell types, including activated T and B cells, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and thymic epithelial cells. ALCAM expression has also been used as a marker for the isolation of pluripotent stem cells.

Applications Reported: This eBioALC48 antibody has been reported for use in flow cytometric analysis.

Applications Tested: This eBioALC48 antibody has been tested by flow cytometric analysis of stimulated mouse splenocytes. This can be used at less than or equal to 0.5 µg per test. A test is defined as the amount (µg) of antibody that will stain a cell sample in a final volume of 100 µL. Cell number should be determined empirically but can range from 10^5 to 10^8 cells/test. It is recommended that the antibody be carefully titrated for optimal performance in the assay of interest.

Target Information

This gene encodes activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), also known as CD166 (cluster of differentiation 166), which is a member of a subfamily of immunoglobulin receptors with five immunoglobulin-like domains (VVC2C2C2) in the extracellular domain. This protein binds to T-cell differentiation antigene CD6, and is implicated in the processes of cell adhesion and migration. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found.
