Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein acts as a glutamate carboxypeptidase on various substrates, including folate and N-acetyl-l-aspartyl-l-glutamate, and is expressed in tissues such as prostate, nervous system, and kidney. Mutations may lead to impaired folate absorption and hyperhomocysteinemia. In the brain, expression may relate to glutamate excitotoxicity, and in the prostate, it is upregulated in cancer cells, serving as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for prostate cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants and isoforms.
