Target Information

Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone that plays a key role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It has a molecular mass of approximately 16 kDa and is encoded by the obese (ob) gene. Leptin is mainly secreted by adipocytes, corresponding to the body’s fat mass, but is also produced by epithelial cells of the stomach and placenta.

Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions that control feeding behavior, hunger, body temperature, and energy expenditure, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells. The hormone influences hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth. It is also involved in thermogenesis and regulation of fatty acid oxidation enzymes. Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
