Target Information

Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone that plays a critical role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It has a molecular weight of approximately 16 kDa and is encoded by the obese (ob) gene. Leptin is primarily secreted by adipocytes, correlating with total body fat mass, and is also produced in smaller quantities by gastric epithelial cells and the placenta.

Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions that regulate feeding, energy expenditure, and body temperature, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells. Through these receptors, leptin influences food intake, thermogenesis, fatty acid oxidation, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, immune responses, and reproductive development. Defects in leptin production can lead to severe hereditary obesity in both rodents and humans.
