Target Information
Gap junctions are specialized plasma membrane structures facilitating cell-to-cell communication through transmembrane channels composed of connexins. Connexins differ by tissue and are classified by molecular mass or sequence similarity into alpha and beta families. For example, CX43 is alpha-1, while CX32 and CX26 are beta-1 and beta-2. Connexins have four transmembrane, three intracellular, and two extracellular regions. Expression varies by tissue and developmental stage, with roles in processes such as embryo implantation.
