Target Information

ITGB1 (Integrin Subunit Beta 1, CD29) is a 110 kDa cell surface glycoprotein expressed by various cell types including all leukocytes.

  • Forms non-covalent heterodimers with at least six alpha chains (α1–α6), determining binding properties of β1 (VLA) integrins.
  • Functions as a cell adhesion molecule on platelets and as a component of protein complexes binding to extracellular matrix proteins.
  • Decreased ITGB1 expression correlates with multidrug resistance in tumor cells.
  • Upregulated during leukocyte migration and involved in immune cell trafficking and inflammatory regulation.
  • Plays a role in tissue damage and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Through ITGB1-dependent mechanisms, fibronectin and type I collagen enhance cytokine secretion in human airway smooth muscle cells in response to IL-1β.
  • Two major forms exist: β1A (present in all tissues except cardiac/skeletal muscle) and β1D (expressed in cardiac/skeletal muscle).
