Target Information
The CNTF protein is a polypeptide hormone acting primarily in the nervous system, promoting neurotransmitter synthesis and neurite outgrowth. It serves as a potent survival factor for neurons and oligodendrocytes, potentially reducing tissue destruction during inflammatory attacks. Mutations causing aberrant splicing lead to CNTF deficiency, though not directly linked to neurologic disease. A read-through transcript variant with ZFP91 and CNTF sequences has been identified but is considered non-coding.
