Aspergillus nidulans의 never in mitosis A (NIMA) 유전자는 mitosis 개시를 조절하는 serine/threonine kinase를 암호화하며, NEK 계열 단백질들은 NIMA와 유사한 기능을 수행하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
NEK6는 C-말단 NIMA-like catalytic domain을 포함하는 NEK형 단백질 kinase를 암호화합니다.
