Occludin은 약 65 kDa의 단백질로, 다양한 인산화 형태(최대 약 82 kDa)로 존재합니다. 이 단백질은 세포 간 접촉 부위에서의 위치 및 기능 조절에 관여하며, polyunsaturated fatty acids에 의해 발현이 증가되어 세포 투과성을 감소시키는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 뇌 조직에서 높은 수준으로 지속적으로 발현되며, 비신경 조직에서는 낮은 수준과 불연속적인 분포를 보입니다. Occludin 구조는 여러 종에서 매우 보존되어 있으며, 종양 혈관의 투과성 증가와 관련된 타이트 접합 단백질의 저발현은 뇌종양 부종에 기여하는 주요 분자적 이상입니다.
