Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade via the c-Met receptor. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, HGF acts as a multifunctional cytokine on epithelial cells. It promotes mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a key role in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration. HGF is secreted as an inactive single-chain precursor and cleaved into active α (69 kDa) and β (34 kDa) chains linked by a disulfide bond. Although part of the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, it lacks protease activity. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
