Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade upon binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Met receptor. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, HGF acts as a multifunctional cytokine primarily on epithelial cells. It promotes mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a key role in angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration. The inactive precursor is cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, which are linked by a disulfide bond to form the active heterodimeric molecule. Although belonging to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, HGF has no detectable protease activity. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
