Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis through activation of a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade upon binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Met receptor. It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and acts as a multifunctional cytokine on epithelial cells. HGF stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a key role in angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration.
The inactive single-chain precursor is cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha chain and a 34-kDa beta chain, linked by a disulfide bond to form the active heterodimeric molecule. The protein belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but lacks detectable protease activity. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
