Target Information
This gene encodes a G protein-coupled receptor with selectivity for three chemokines: IP10 (interferon-gamma-inducible 10 kDa protein), Mig (monokine induced by interferon-gamma), and I-TAC (interferon-inducible T cell alpha-chemoattractant).
These chemokines belong to the CXC subfamily, characterized by a single amino acid separating the first two of four conserved cysteine residues.
Binding of chemokines to CXCR3 induces leukocyte trafficking responses, including integrin activation, cytoskeletal rearrangement, and chemotaxis.
This receptor couples with Gi-type G proteins, and its signaling involves phosphorylation-dependent receptor internalization and recycling.
CXCR3 is highly expressed in effector/memory T cells and inflamed tissues, playing a key role in inflammatory cell recruitment.
It is also a potential target for small-molecule antagonists in inflammatory disease therapy.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
