Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases are a large family of zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They participate in various biological processes such as respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid. These enzymes show extensive diversity in tissue distribution and subcellular localization.
The gene encoding Carbonic Anhydrase IV produces a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane isozyme expressed on the luminal surfaces of pulmonary capillaries and proximal renal tubules. Although its exact function remains unclear, it may play a role in inherited renal abnormalities involving bicarbonate transport.
