eIF4E는 번역 효율 향상, 스플라이싱, mRNA 안정성 및 RNA 핵 내 수출 등 여러 세포 과정에 관여합니다. 모든 진핵세포 mRNA는 5' 말단에 7-메틸구아노신 캡 구조(m7GpppX)를 가지고 있으며, eIF4E는 이 캡 구조에 리보솜을 유도하는 번역 개시 인자입니다. eIF4E는 24 kDa 폴리펩타이드로 자유형과 EIF4F 복합체 형태로 존재합니다. EIF4E는 진핵세포 단백질 합성의 속도 제한 요소이며, mRNA-리보솜 결합 단계에 관여합니다. EIF4F의 다른 구성 요소는 ATPase 및 RNA helicase 활성을 가진 50 kDa EIF4A와 220 kDa EIF4G입니다.
