PON2 유전자는 파라옥소나제 유전자 패밀리에 속하며, 인간 염색체 7번 장완에 인접하게 위치한 세 멤버 중 하나입니다. 이 단백질은 다양한 인체 조직에서 발현되며, 세포막에 결합되어 산화 스트레스로부터 세포를 보호하는 항산화 기능을 가집니다. 또한 세균의 quorum-sensing 매개체인 acylhomoserine lactones를 가수분해하는 활성을 가지며, 병원성 세균에 대한 방어 반응에도 관여할 수 있습니다. 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 혈관 질환 및 당뇨 관련 다양한 표현형과 연관될 수 있습니다. 여러 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있으며, 다양한 이소폼을 암호화합니다.
