Target Information
The alpha-1b adrenoceptor is an adrenergic receptor that mediates smooth muscle contraction, controlling vascular tone and blood pressure, and plays a role in atherosclerosis development. Reduced expression is associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can act as a proto-oncogene when constitutively activated, leading to neoplastic transformation. Expression has been observed in adrenal, aorta, brain regions, eye, heart, kidney, liver, prostate, spinal cord, and spleen. ESTs have been isolated from kidney (normal and cancer) and lung carcinoma libraries.
