Target Information
ATP-dependent calcium pumps help maintain low cytoplasmic free calcium concentrations. These pumps, located in intracellular organelles, belong to the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticulum calcium (SERCA) ATPase family.
- SERCA1 gene: Expressed in type II (fast) skeletal muscle.
- SERCA2 gene: Generates muscle-specific SERCA2a (type I, cardiac, smooth muscle) and ubiquitous SERCA2b isoforms.
- SERCA3 gene: Found in non-muscle cells, less characterized.
