Target Information
PER2 (Period circadian protein homolog 2) is a mainly nuclear protein involved in nucleocytoplasmic shuttling through interactions with other circadian core oscillator proteins and phosphorylation. It belongs to the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor family and contains PAC and PAS domains. PER2 is a key component of the circadian core oscillator, interacting with CRY, CLOCK/NPAS2, BMAL1/2, CSNK1D/E, TIMELESS, and other PER proteins. It plays a crucial role in generating circadian rhythms and acts as a negative regulator in the circadian transcriptional loop. PER2 shows strong expression in skeletal muscle and pancreas, with weaker expression in the lung. Mutations in PER2 are associated with familial advanced sleep-phase syndrome (FASPS).
