Target Information
Polyamines such as spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine are polycationic alkylamines involved in numerous cellular functions, including:
- Cell cycle modulation
- Scavenging reactive oxygen species
- Control of gene expression
They also play key roles in neurotransmission by regulating cell-surface receptor activity and intracellular signaling pathways.
The SMOX gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, some lacking significant oxidase activity on natural polyamine substrates.
