Target Information
Laminins are essential and abundant structural non-collagenous glycoproteins localized to basement membranes. These membranes are composed of Laminins stabilized by Type IV Collagen networks, Nidogen, and various proteoglycans. They are found under epithelial layers, around blood vessel endothelium, and surrounding muscle, peripheral nerve, and fat cells.
Basement membrane formation influences cell proliferation, phenotype, migration, gene expression, and tissue architecture. Each Laminin is a heterotrimer consisting of alpha, beta, and gamma chain subunits that are secreted and incorporated into the extracellular matrix (ECM). Laminins can self-assemble, bind to other matrix macromolecules, and interact with cells via Integrins, dystroglycan, and Laminin receptors.
The human Laminin gamma-1 gene (LAMC1) is located on chromosome 1q31 and is ubiquitously expressed in tissues producing basement membranes.
