Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins with diverse functions in excitable and non-excitable cells.
The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+) differs from other potassium channels as its activation is controlled by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K+ channel core is an alpha homotetramer containing a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium binding domain.
In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit exists in 1:1 stoichiometry, reducing by 5–10 fold the calcium concentration required to keep the pore open.
