Target Information
Megsin (also known as SerpinB7 or TP55) is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which are essential for maintaining glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, Megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor that can inactivate MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—key enzymes involved in extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of Megsin leads to mesangial cell proliferation and matrix expansion, often associated with immune complex deposition. These characteristics suggest Megsin plays a significant role in renal structure regulation and may be implicated in various nephropathies.
