Rafivirumab은 광견병 바이러스(Rabies virus)를 표적으로 하는 바이오시밀러로, 예방(prophylaxis) 연구에 사용됩니다. Rabies virus (Neurotropic lyssavirus)는 Rhabdoviridae 계통에 속하는 단일가닥 음성 RNA 바이러스입니다.
이 바이러스는 5개의 단백질(당단백질, 핵단백질 및 3개의 추가 단백질)을 암호화하며, 탄환형 구조를 가지며 단백질 외피와 지질막으로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 외부 표면에는 5–10 nm 길이, 3 nm 직경의 돌기형 당단백질이 분포합니다. 평균 길이는 약 780 nm이며, 지질 용매에 의해 감염성이 소실됩니다.
Rabies virus는 매우 다양한 숙주를 감염시키며, 중추신경계 자극, 마비, 사망을 초래하는 급성 신경계 감염을 유발합니다. 매년 약 50,000명의 인명 피해를 일으키는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
